I'm Colynn O'Brien and I do trademarks and business law for female founders.
I started off my legal career as a litigator. I was in court, I was helping people get back into their homes after they had had an insurance loss, and I was reviewing a bunch of insurance policies—which are contracts. I realized how much I loved contracts, how much I loved protecting people, helping them explain their legal rights, and helping them get back into their houses.
More recently in my career, I started getting involved with female-owned companies and I realized how intimidating legal is for non-lawyers, so I decided that I wanted to help. Once I started helping these female founders, I realized how much of an impact that was making, so I took a leap of faith and started my own law firm serving mainly female founders.
I myself am a female founder, I'm a mom, and I know the unique challenges presented to female founders and what it takes to run a successful company, so I want to be there to help my clients do the same. After seeing some of the strong women that I'm close with struggle financially and the impact that that had not only on the women, but also on their families, I decided that I wanted to help women in my legal practice.
I help female founders with anything from protecting their brand and assets with copyrights and trademarks to what contracts they need, drafting and reviewing their contracts, also negotiations, and forming their businesses. Less than 2% of female-founded companies ever gross more than $1 million a year.
So many women are starting their own businesses these days, but many are leaving their companies vulnerable without the proper legal protections in place, and honest mistakes put a lot of companies out of business. I'm here to bridge that gap and help female founders legally protect their businesses and assets so they can keep money in their pockets, earn more, and build wealth—that way, they can spend more time on the important things in life, like their families and going on adventures.
